With a strong commitment to basic science and clinical research, the Department of Urology is dedicated to maintaining its reputation as a center of urological research excellence.
All faculty contribute to a vigorous research effort intended to support the highest quality of innovative patient care, and all are expected to publish every year. Resident physicians and clinical and basic science fellows also participate in this departmental research effort.
The department has received National Institutes of Health funding for 30 consecutive years and ranked 31st in the 2023 Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research report.
The department’s intramural grant program is designed to support faculty in launching new research projects. With an annual available pool of $50,000, the program provides essential seed funding to help innovative projects gain initial traction. This program allows faculty and residents to explore preliminary concepts and gather pilot data that can make their studies competitive for extramural medical research funding.
