Urologic oncology is a sub-discipline of urology that specializes in treating cancers affecting the urinary tract and male reproductive system, including bladder, kidney, penile, prostate, and testicular cancers.
Urologists who specialize in urologic oncology are fellowship-trained experts in the diagnosis, treatment, and surgical management of these cancers. They combine advanced surgical techniques with multidisciplinary care to provide personalized treatment plans for patients with urologic malignancies.
Division of Urologic Oncology Clinical Expertise
Bladder Cancer
Our bladder cancer program is a world leader in bladder preservation for patients with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). Our surgeons use the latest technologies and have pioneered a series of multi-agent intravescial chemotherapy regimens that are changing the way NMIBC is treated, including the gemcitabine-docetaxel (gem-doce) regimen that is currently being tested in the nationwide BRIDGE clinical trial. Our team has a wealth of experience in performing the complex procedures necessary to remove bladder tumors.
Kidney Cancer
Our surgeons offer the best options available for kidney cancer surgery. In 1992, our team was the first in the world to perform laparoscopic partial nephrectomy, which removes tumors without removing the kidney, and our surgeons continue to offer the procedure, assisted by the most advanced robotics available. Our doctors participate in research studies of the latest therapies for kidney cancer and can offer them to our patients before they’re widely available elsewhere.
Penile Cancer
Our experts focus on every aspect of penile cancer, including suvivorship. Our surgeons are top researchers who participate in clinical trials of the latest breakthroughs in treatment.
Prostate Cancer
Our surgeons have been at the forefront of prostate cancer care for nearly 100 years, helping to pioneer and refine transurethral resection of the prostate and to better understand the healing process following resection. Our team played a lead role in making UI Health Care the first center in Iowa to offer MRI-ultrasound fusion guided prostate biopsy, and our surgeons perform the most precise minimally invasive prostate procedures possible by using the latest robotic technology available.
Testicular Cancer
Our surgeons specialize in testicular cancer and work with a multidisciplinary team that offers personalized care, including fertility preservation and clinical trials of the latest therapies before they’re widely available on the market.
