Functional urology is a sub-discipline of urology that specializes in treating non-cancerous conditions of the genitourinary organs (ureter, bladder, prostate, urethra, penis, vagina, testicles).

Urologists who specialize in functional urology are experts in medical and surgical treatments that restore function to these organs, with the ultimate goal of improving our patients’ quality of life and preventing the development of future urologic problems.

All faculty in the Division of Functional Urology at the University of Iowa are fellowship-trained, which means we have the collective expertise to manage any functional urologic condition with the most advanced and up-to-date technologies and techniques available.

Our faculty are nationally and internationally recognized leaders in their fields, participating in clinical trials, research studies, and international consortiums that are advancing the field of urology.

Our dedicated team of fellowship-trained urologic surgeons has deep expertise in a wide range of medical and surgical treatments and can manage any condition with the most advanced and up-to-date techniques and technologies available.

Division of Functional Urology Clinical Expertise

Voiding Dysfunction

Voiding dysfunction includes a range of conditions that affect the bladder or urinary function and lead to difficulty with urination, including benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), lower urinary tract symptoms, neurogenic bladder, urinary tract infection, painful urination, and urinary incontinence. Our urologists are experts in the most advanced options to diagnose and treat the underlying causes of voiding dysfunction and help patients find relief and get back to their normal lives. We offer every therapeutic treatment option available, from conservative management to advanced surgical interventions, including minimally invasive robotic surgery options. We are also home to the most sophisticated urodynamics lab in the state. Our physicians are also leading researchers in the field, actively participating in shaping the future of voiding dysfunction care.

Kidney Stones

We have the most experienced stone experts in Iowa, uniquely trained in complex surgical and medical kidney stone management and offering personalized treatment plans to remove stones, relieve pain, and help prevent stones from returning. Our surgeons are also actively involved in ongoing research to help create better treatments and better ways to prevent kidney stones.

Urologic Pain

Our urologic pain experts specialize in helping patients with even the most difficult-to-treat urologic pain. They work closely with experts in other specialty areas, including gynecology, neurology,  and infectious disease to address the cause of pain by creating personalized treatment plans.

Genitourinary Reconstruction

Genitourinary reconstruction is any surgery used to treat conditions that affect the function of the genitourinary organs such as the ureter, bladder, prostate, urethra, penis, vagina, and testicles. Our specialists are experts in a variety of surgical treatment options, including minimally invasive and robotic-assisted surgery, to relieve pain and restore function. They also participate in clinical trials and research studies of the most advanced and up-to-date treatments, techniques, and technologies so that they can make them available to our patients sooner.

Urogynecology

UI Health Care has Iowa’s largest team of board-certified urogynecologists — specialists in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery — with intensive training in diagnosing and treating pelvic floor disorders. Our expertise and ongoing research enable us to offer a wide range of treatments, including some not available anywhere else. Because pelvic floor problems can affect the digestive system, our urogynecologists work closely with colleagues in gastroenterology and colorectal surgery to provide the best care for patients with accidental bowel leakage and other defecatory problems.

Men’s Health

The fellowship-trained urologists in our men’s health program have extensive experience helping men understand and address their health issues. Our physicians are experts in the latest and most advanced techniques and technologies for diagnosing and treating men’s health concerns. Some men’s health conditions require only urologic care, but others may be a sign of more complex medical issues. Our physicians collaborate closely with UI Health Care physicians in other specialties so that patients receive the right care from the best experts available.

Male Infertility

We offer the most advanced care available to diagnose and treat the causes of infertility. Our team includes the state’s only fellowship-trained urologist with a specialized focus in male infertility. UI Health Care is home to a state-of-the-art andrology lab that focuses exclusively on reproductive testing for fertility issues in men. Our lab offers motile sperm isolation for procedures like in vitro fertilization or intrauterine insemination and semen cryopreservation to preserve sperm for future use.

Vasectomy

Our vasectomy care team includes a fellowship-trained urologist with decades of experience performing vasectomies, including the minimally invasive no-scalpel approach.

Male Sexual Dysfunction

Sexual dysfunction may include difficulty maintaining an erection, problems with ejaculation, a lack of interest in sex, or pain during intercourse. Our fellowship-trained urologists are experts in uncovering the causes of sexual dysfunction and creating a personalized care plan, all in a compassionate and respectful environment. We offer the latest and most advanced diagnostic testing. Conditions we treat include erectile dysfunction, Peyronie’s disease, low testosterone, premature ejaculation, painful intercourse, and priapism.
