Pediatric urology is a sub-discipline of urology that specializes in the treatment of children and young adults who have problems involving the kidney, bladder, urethra, and reproductive organs (ovaries, uterus, vagina, testicles, and penis).

Our department was home to Iowa’s first pediatric urologist in 1974, and our team continues to be staffed by the only board specialty certified pediatric urologists in the state. We specialize in treating children, and our care is delivered by a multidisciplinary team that includes pediatric urologists, pediatricians, a pediatric psychologist, nurses, pediatric radiologists, pediatric anesthesiologists, child life specialists, and other health care professionals.

Our pediatric urology team uses the latest technologies and treatments to provide the best care available, and our faculty has conducted groundbreaking research in areas that include vesicoureteral reflux, bowel and bladder dysfunction, neurogenic bladder, and hydronephrosis.

Division of Pediatric Urology Clinical Expertise

Pediatric Urology

University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital is home to Iowa’s only board-certified pediatric urologists. All pediatric urology faculty have undergone two years of additional pediatric urology training following their general urology residency. Our team provides expert care for the full range of urologic conditions in pediatric patients.

Voiding Improvement

In some children, an underlying psychological condition may have led to bowel or bladder issues. In other children, bowel and bladder issues may lead to significant emotional problems. Our Voiding Improvement Clinic, the only clinic of its kind in the Midwest, is a partnership between our pediatric urology and child psychology providers and is devoted to treating pediatric bladder and bowel issues using a collaborative, individualized approach.

Differences of Sex Development

Differences of sex development is a group of conditions that lead to atypical development of the internal or external sex organs. These developmental differences occur before birth. Our multidisciplinary team works with families to provide comprehensive and compassionate care, with counseling and support built into the plan so that families are prepared to cope with the diagnoses, complexities, and unknown outcomes as early in the process as possible.
